The Miracle in Your Mess

“We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us—they help us learn to be patient. And patience develops strength of character in us and helps us trust God more each time we use it until finally our hope and faith are strong and steady.” Romans 5:3-4 (TLB)
I used to think of miracles as being like a genie offering you three wishes or Superman suddenly appearing to save the day! The truth is that life is messy, and God works best in the midst of that mess. Think about it. If everything were perfect in your life, you wouldn’t need God. You wouldn’t pray and connect with Him. You wouldn’t rely on Him. And, you would miss out on the whole reason you were created – to be in a relationship with your Creator. It’s my mess that leads me to God and causes me to lean on Him. This was the case for the woman in Luke 8:40-48 who had suffered for twelve years with an infirmity no one could fix. Living in isolation as a social outcast she reached out to Jesus with her problem. Fearing exposure, she hid in the crowd to simply touch Jesus in hopes that touch would turn her mess into a miracle, and it did!
Life is a beautiful mess most of the time. It’s beautiful because God gets into the mess with us and turns it into a miracle. We think we need to clean up our mess before God can work a miracle, but the opposite is true! God is waiting for us to invite Him into our mess because He’s the only One who can clean it up. He takes our messes and turns them into miracles. The Bible says that the very problems and trials we face daily are good for us because God can use them to develop our character so that others may see the reflection of His beauty in us.
So, don’t hide your messes. Admit them to God and invite Him to start working a miracle in your life. Then, be transparent with others so they can see the beauty of Christ reflected through your brokenness. One of my favorite scriptures is 2 Corinthians 4:7 “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”
We are jars of clay on the outside; but, on the inside, we carry the beauty and brilliance of Christ. The more cracked and broken the jar of clay is, the more Christ’s power and beauty shine through. Don’t try to hide your brokenness. Bring the broken pieces of your life to God, and let Him make something beautiful out of them. Ask Him to take the mess of your mistakes, sins, and failures and turn them into His miracle. Let Him take the ashes of your greatest pain and brokenness and turn them into a brilliant and beautiful light that brings beauty to others. When you do, you’ll discover the miracle in your mess.
