“Jesus replied, ‘I tell you the truth, you want to be with Me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs. But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God has given Me the seal of His approval.’”
John 6:26-27 (NLT)

Two of the most popular miracles of Jesus are recorded in John 6.  The feeding of the 5,000 and when Jesus walked on water.  Both illustrate His power over nature and His ability to meet every need in our lives.  What if the boy had not offered Jesus his lunch?  He would have missed the miracle of what God can do when we offer Him what we have, even if it’s just a little.  Little is much when God is in it. It’s remarkable what God can do when we simply follow the light He gives us!

Then, when the storms of life come, where do you turn?  The disciples discovered through their own experience the power of Jesus not only to provide every need but also to protect them in the storms of life. We need the light when we go through dark times. His light brings hope, comfort, and security as we follow Him. The darkness can never extinguish His light.

With His popularity growing, many were questioning His identity.  As He revealed Himself to them and spoke of the cost of discipleship, many of those who followed Him began to fall away.  As you read John 6, reconsider why you follow Christ. Allow the light of His Word to expose the truth in your life. Examine your own motives for following Jesus. If we follow Him for self-serving reasons, we haven’t really abandoned ourselves to Him. It becomes more about what we can get than what we can give.  We become consumers treating our relationship with God like a magic Genie concerned more about our comfort than developing Christlike character. This would be a good time to recommit your heart to Jesus saying, “Sometimes, Lord, when your light exposes the selfish motives of my heart it hurts. I want to spend my energy seeking the life you have for me, one that pleases you. Forgive me for being more concerned for the things of this world than what has eternal value. Thank You that You promised to provide all my needs, and You will never leave me or forsake me. I commit to following You whatever the cost.”

Read John 6 now and note what God is pointing out to you. Spend some time in prayer talking to God about it.
