The Bridge to Life
“God our Savior longs for all to be saved and to understand this truth: That God is on one side and all the people on the other side, and Christ Jesus, Himself man, is between them to bring them together, by giving His life for all mankind.”
1 Timothy 2:4-6 (LB)
The word for “priest” in Latin means “bridge builder.” Jesus is described in the Bible as our High Priest who came to offer Himself and construct a bridge to God. Bridges are connectors. They connect us to the other side so that we can travel freely and have access to what would otherwise be incapable of travel unless you can swim really well or have a boat.
I can’t think of a better visual understanding than how Paul described our High Priest as the bridge to God. He begins with a clear understanding of the will of God. “God our Savior longs for ALL to be saved….” That includes you! That’s the heart of God. God is love, but love is worthless without an object to love. So, God made you and me to love us. He didn’t make us like a robot programmed to love Him back. He gave us an incredible gift called “free will”, the ability to receive or reject His love. The problem is that sin came into the world and created a huge chasm that separated us from God. God is holy and perfect, and we have all sinned and fallen short of His glory. Still, He loved us too much to leave us separated from Him. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to bridge the gap that separated man from God.
Look at Paul’s visual description. “God is on one side and all the people on the other side, and Christ Jesus, Himself man, is between them to bring them together, by giving His life for all mankind.” He did that at the cross! Jesus is the bridge to life! Through His death and resurrection, you and I can experience a new life! We can connect with God in a way we never could before, in a personal and intimate relationship that will last forever!
