“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”
Psalm 46:10 (NLT)

Have you ever felt like you were at your wit’s end?  Maybe you are there right now.  You hit a dead end in your marriage, your career, your finances, with your kids, or some sinful habit that you just can’t seem to break free of even though you know it’s self-destructive. The Psalmist has a powerful promise for calming our troubled hearts. He writes in Psalm 46:10a (NLT), “Be still, and know that I am God!” Commenting on this verse, pastor and author Warren Wiersbe said, "‘Be still’ literally means ‘Take your hands off! Relax!’ We like to be ‘hands-on’ people and manage our own lives, but God is God, and we are but His servants.” In other words, stop trying to control everything and release your life to God’s care and control.

If you really want a grasp of this promise, check out the different translations of it. Let me share just a few I came across.

  • The Contemporary English Version puts it like this: “Our God says, ‘Calm down, and learn that I am God!’"

  • God’s Word Translation says, “Let go {of your concerns}! Then you will know that I am God.”

  •  The Message paraphrases it like this: "Step out of the traffic! Take a long, loving look at Me, your High God, above politics, above everything."

  •  The Living Bible says, “Stand silent! Know that I am God!”

  •  The International Children’s Bible translates it like this: “God says, ‘Be quiet and know that I am God.’”

  •  Today’s English Version says, "‘Stop fighting,’ He says, ‘and know that I am God.’”

Could it be that you are fighting a battle that you were never meant to fight?  You are trying to accomplish in your own strength what only God can do in His mighty power.  Stop fighting and surrender to God’s power.  Just be still and see what God does at your wit’s end.  The Bible teaches us that the battle is the Lord’s, but the victory is ours!  Just check out the next verse after Psalm 46:10. It says in verse 11, “The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” So just be still and know that HE IS GOD.

Dear Lord, thank You for reminding me that You are God, and I am not! I surrender my life to Your care and control and trust You to do what only You can do. Help me to learn to rest in Your power and stop fighting a battle that You’ve already won!  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Another important part of your daily devotional is spending time with God in prayer. The Woodlands Church Prayer Board lists prayer requests submitted by our members and provides a way to send them some encouragement by using a button on the page to let them know that you prayed for them. Whether you use the Prayer Board, or pray from your heart, the goal is to build the habit of incorporating prayer into your quiet time.

Need prayer yourself? Let us know by submitting a prayer request on the Woodlands Church Prayer Board.
