“I said, ‘Have mercy on me, LORD; heal me, for I have sinned against You.’” Psalm 41:4 (NIV)
The deepest healing we can ever experience is spiritual healing. There’s a sickness latent in the soul of every man. It is incurably malignant. It separates us from God and one another. This is the condition of every human heart. The Bible says, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9 (NIV) Because of sin, in our natural state, we are spiritually dead, yet physically alive. The healing we need is spiritual. It is supernatural! This is the miracle of transformational healing! It is a spiritual healing that quickens us to life spiritually when we were dead in our trespasses and sins. Jesus didn’t come to reform us. He came to transform us. Jesus didn’t come to make bad men good; He came to make dead men live! Only through the power of His resurrection, can we possibly have new life in Christ. To a religious ruler seeking that life, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” John 3:3 (NLT) This is a spiritual birth brought by spiritual healing in the soul of man.
The apostle Paul describes this miraculous supernatural spiritual healing in Ephesians 2:1-7 (NLT) like this: “Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature, we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else. But God is so rich in mercy, and He loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, He gave us life when He raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For He raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.” Then he tells us why God did this: “So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of His grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all He has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.”
When God heals you spiritually, He transforms your spirit from one of death to life so that He may put His grace and glory on display! That life is none other than the life of His Son, the Lord Jesus, restored in the heart of man. Your body now becomes the temple of the Holy Spirit who alone can reproduce the character of Christ in all that you do and say and become.
This means there are only two possibilities for every one of us. We can stay dead spiritually or come alive in Christ through the miracle of spiritual healing. Having come alive in Christ there remains two possibilities. We can live, really live spiritually, as though we are alive in Christ, connecting with Him daily and experiencing the adventure of His saving life, or we can live as though we were still dead, ensnared by the hurts, habits, and hang-ups He came to deliver us from, failing to thrive spiritually. We need not only the miracle of spiritual healing to revive our hearts but also to daily renew our hearts. In his confession in Psalm 51, David prayed, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” (Verse 10 KJV) Only God can create within us a clean heart that makes us spiritually alive! And only God can renew the right spirit within us that we may experience that life daily.
Have you experienced that life? The Bible says in 1 John 5:12 (NLT) “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life.” You can receive His life today. Ask Him to heal you spiritually right now. Simply open your heart to God and ask Him to create in you a clean heart, forgive your sin and renew the right spirit within you. Trust Him today as your Savior and follow Him as your Lord. Then, thank Him for hearing your prayer, forgiving your sin, and making you spiritually alive!
