An Unforgettable Evening

“It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He now showed them the full extent of His love.”

John 13:1 (NIV)

It was a Thursday evening, the night before Good Friday.  It would be an unforgettable evening for Jesus’ disciples as He showed them the full extent of His love.  Never in the three years with them had they doubted His love. Yet, on this evening, He would take special care to express His love for them in a way they would never forget!

Following the Last Supper that they would share together, Jesus modeled servanthood in a way that humbled them all.  “He got up from the table, took off His robe, wrapped a towel around His waist and poured water into a basin.  Then He began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel He had around Him.”  John 13:4-5 (NLT)

While they’re processing this display of humility and service, Jesus challenges them to practice the same attitude toward one another - to love each other as He had loved them. “When He had finished washing their feet, He put on His clothes and returned to His place. ‘Do you understand what I have done for you?’ He asked them. ‘You call Me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.’” John 13:12-15 (NIV)

Read John 13.  Picture yourself with the disciples. Experience the love that He lavished on them.  Here’s another highlight from Holy Week.  Let the example of His servant leadership that evening inspire you to serve others this Easter! We begin the first of 13 Easter services on Good Friday to Easter Sunday. If you haven’t already done so, now would be a good time to volunteer to serve others at one or more of these services. You can register now to serve at https://my.wc.org/eastervolunteer
