A Singular Focus in Life
“Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we're in.”
Hebrews 12:2a (MSG)
Contrary to what our culture suggests, multi-tasking doesn’t produce more results, happiness, or fulfillment. Studies and practical experience prove multi-tasking only produces more stress. Anyone who’s tried it knows. The truth is, the more you narrow your focus, the more you broaden your life! This is the power of a singular focus.
As so many others, I’ve discovered that focusing on one thing reduces stress. It takes the complex and makes it simple. A singular focus fosters success. Narrowing your focus is the path to simplicity, and simplicity is the path to success. A singular focus increases power. Light diffused is not very powerful, but when light is focused, it becomes a laser with tremendous power. These are just three of the benefits of a singular focus.
Understanding the power of a singular focus, the writer of Hebrews says, “Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in.” Hebrews 12:2a (MSG)
Other translations use the phrase “… fixing our eyes on Jesus.” When we keep our eyes fixed on Him, we find ourselves less distracted by the world and temptations around us. When we fix our eyes on Him, we discover the one thing that’s necessary in life – Love! God not only loves, He is love! In 1 Corinthians 14, after a long discussion on spiritual gifts, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Let love be your greatest aim….” 1 Corinthians 14:1 (TLB)
What is your greatest aim in life? That’s what you’re focused on. If you’re experiencing more stress, less joy, and little fulfillment in life, perhaps the problem is your focus. I love the words of an old hymn I grew up hearing so often.
“Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.”
If you want to broaden your life, narrow your focus. Fix your eyes on Jesus. He began and finished the race we are in. He is love! When our eyes are focused on Him, our greatest aim will be love!
Another important part of your daily devotional is spending time with God in prayer. The Woodlands Church Prayer Board lists prayer requests submitted by our members and provides a way to send them some encouragement by using a button on the page to let them know that you prayed for them. Whether you use the Prayer Board, or pray from your heart, the goal is to build the habit of incorporating prayer into your quiet time.
