Healing In Jesus

“But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5 (NIV)

The pandemic has brought laser focus on the medical community and the fragile nature of our human condition. Never before have we been more conscious of how vulnerable and subject to disease and death we really are or how dependent we are on God for every breath. Worldwide relief is being felt through the massive global distribution of immunizations that promises over 90% effectiveness in preventing COVID-19. That’s good news!  We all pray for an end to this dreaded virus.

Sin has broken our world and brought disease and death, regardless of whether the sin was our own fault or not. We live in a fallen world. One of the primary ministries of Jesus along with preaching and teaching was healing. God is a God of healing and wholeness. In Exodus 15:26c (NIV) the Bible says, “… I am the LORD, who heals you.” It’s one of the ways He redeems our world.

If we are to experience the miracle of healing, whether it is physical, emotional, relational or spiritual, we must lean on God’s healing promises and respond in faith to His Word.  One of my favorite promises is found in Isaiah 53:5 (NIV) It says, “But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed.”  The wounds that Jesus bore were for our healing. He took our place on the cross to satisfy the just penalty for our sin. He suffered and died in our place so that we may have peace with God.

When you are praying for whatever healing miracle you need, search the Scriptures for the promises of God and lean on them.  As you do, you’ll discover three ways in which God heals: immediate, delayed and ultimate.

When the healing is immediate, it is obvious and thrilling, as when Jesus gave sight to the blind, made the lame to walk, or the deaf to hear.  He alone gets the glory, and the healing will point others to Christ.

Sometimes, the healing is delayed as God shapes our character in the process. God is more concerned with our character than our comfort and will often use delays in our lives to shape our character for the assignment He is preparing us for or the faith He is developing in us.

The ultimate healing is Heaven!  Only in Heaven will there be no more tears, no more pain, no more suffering, and no more death!

Whichever way God heals, it is a miracle!  God works every miracle in His time and in His way.  Just trust Him and let God be God.  When we are convinced that He loves us with an everlasting love, we won’t have any hesitation to pray for the miracle of healing.
